High-Throughput Transactional Email on AWS SES: Deliverability and Compliance

Architect enterprise transactional email on AWS SES: maximize inbox deliverability, configure SPF/DKIM/DMARC, and handle high-volume spikes.

Whether it is a verification code, an invoice receipt, or a password reset token, a transactional email has to reach the inbox within seconds. Landing in spam or arriving late directly hurts retention and revenue.

Third-party providers like SendGrid and Mailgun charge hundreds of dollars a month for volume, while Amazon SES provides enterprise-grade email infrastructure at roughly $0.10 per 1,000 emails. Here is how 3 Dices Technology architects resilient SES setups.

Cryptographic authentication: SPF, DKIM, DMARC

Email providers now strictly reject mail from domains lacking proper authentication:

  • SPF (Sender Policy Framework) authorizes AWS SES mail servers to send on your domain's behalf.
  • DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail) cryptographically signs outgoing headers using 2048-bit keys managed by Easy DKIM.
  • DMARC enforces policy (p=reject or p=quarantine) and routes aggregated delivery reports so you can monitor spoofing attempts.

Dedicated IPs versus shared pools

For senders dispatching over 100,000 emails per month, we configure dedicated IP pools. This isolates your sender reputation from bad actors on shared networks and keeps deliverability above 99.5%.

Asynchronous queuing and bounce handling

Never trigger a synchronous email API call inside your web application's request thread. We build asynchronous delivery pipelines: the backend pushes email payloads to Amazon SQS, an AWS Lambda worker pulls tasks and dispatches via SES, and Amazon SNS catches bounces and complaints to maintain suppression lists automatically.

The architecture components

Our production transactional email setup:

  • Email dispatch engine: Amazon SES (API or SMTP) for high-speed generation and global transport.
  • Asynchronous queue: Amazon SQS (FIFO) to buffer high-volume spikes without throttling your APIs.
  • Worker compute: AWS Lambda for payload templating and batch SES dispatch.
  • Feedback loop: Amazon SNS to capture hard bounces and spam complaints in real time.
  • Reputation monitoring: Amazon CloudWatch to alert when bounce rate exceeds 2% or complaint rate exceeds 0.05%.

Keep critical mail out of spam

Our AWS architecture work implements high-deliverability SES pipelines wired into the rest of your serverless backend.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is AWS SES cheaper than SendGrid or Mailgun?
SES provides enterprise-grade email transport at about $0.10 per 1,000 emails, where third-party providers often charge hundreds of dollars per month for the same volume.
Do I need SPF, DKIM, and DMARC?
Yes. Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft now reject or quarantine mail from domains without proper cryptographic authentication. SPF authorizes SES, DKIM signs headers, and DMARC enforces policy.
When should I use a dedicated IP?
Above roughly 100,000 emails per month, a dedicated IP pool isolates your sender reputation from bad actors on shared networks and keeps deliverability above 99.5%.
