Monolith to Microservices on EKS

A growing SaaS product was running on one overloaded server with manual, risky deploys and a single point of failure. 3 Dices containerized the application, moved it to Amazon EKS with proper network isolation, built a CI/CD pipeline, and added real monitoring, cutting run cost by ~40% with a zero-downtime cutover.

The challenge

A growing SaaS product ran on one overloaded server. Deploys were manual and risky, scaling meant buying a bigger box, and a single failure took the whole product down. The team needed to move to a resilient, scalable setup without a maintenance window they could not afford.

  • Single overloaded server with no horizontal scaling path
  • Manual, risky deploys with no automated tests or rollback
  • A single failure took the entire product down
  • No maintenance window available for a big-bang migration

Our solution

Containerization & Compute

  • Containerized the application and moved workloads onto Amazon EKS
  • Public/private subnet separation with ECS Fargate and RDS in private subnets
  • NAT Gateway for controlled outbound access

Network & Security

  • Moved RDS and Fargate off public subnets behind private networking
  • Hardened security groups to self-referencing rules
  • Isolated the data tier from direct internet exposure

Delivery & Observability

  • CI/CD pipeline on GitHub Actions with automated tests and staged rollout
  • One-step rollback for bad releases
  • CloudWatch metrics, logs, and alarms for live visibility

The results

Cost & Scale

  • ~40% lower monthly run cost after right-sizing
  • Horizontal scaling instead of buying a bigger box
  • Compute sized to actual demand

Reliability

  • Zero-downtime cutover to the new architecture
  • No single point of failure across tiers
  • Data tier isolated in private subnets

Delivery

  • Independent, repeatable deploys instead of manual pushes
  • One-step rollback on bad releases
  • Live metrics, logs, and alarms in CloudWatch
